Abstract

men in question exhibits such a gradation of intermediate forms as to suggest strongly that it is a hybrid; and this view is supported by the fact that the protonemata, the possession of which is the only other constant specific mark, are also very variable, a number of leaves being without them altogether. No fruit or perichaetia are present in this gathering. I might mention that in the same locality I collected normal plants of D. calycinum and also the form with the perichaetia of D. semicryptum, and that in both these cases the leaf cells were obscure. D. semicryptum was not found at all, and this of course creates a difficulty. It must, however, be remembered that my visit to the locality, which so far as I know has never been worked through for mosses, consisted of a hurried journey through several miles of dense forest, and that very many species must have been overlooked. From my knowledge of the distribution of D. semicryptum, I should expect it to grow in a mountainous district such as the one mentioned.
