Abstract
The class struggle became sharply exacerbated in the 1760s and early 1770s, culminating in the Peasant War of 1773–75. The country's rural and urban population participated broadly in the movement. One of the most important urban disturbances in the early 1770s was the Moscow uprising of September 15–17, 1771, known in the historical literature as the "plague riot."
