Abstract

A new species of athecate hydroid of the genus Acaulis Stimpson 1854 (Acaulidae) is described. The species is named Acaulis ilonae sp. n. It is characterised by having short capitate tentacles in young specimens, while in adult specimens the tentacles become progressively longer towards the aboral region. Gonophores are born in the axils of the tentacles. The development of the embryo, the structure of the adult hydroids, and their asexual and sexual reproduction are described.
