Abstract

SummaryA new radiological sign of diaphragmatic hernia is described. This consists of a moon‐shaped defect in the gastric fundus immediately to the left of the cardio‐oesophageal opening. It is seen with a small volume of barium, 25 ml., in the supine position. Normal barium meal volumes do not usually reveal the defect. When the hernia is produced the defect is usually not seen. The mechanism of production seems to be that prior to actual herniation, that portion of the fundus which is to herniate becomes positioned between diaphragm and remaining fundus. Nine cases are reported.
