Abstract

AbstractSolubility data for Belle Fourche montmorillonite plotted on 2pH — pMg2+ vs. pSi (OH)04 axes, demonstrate that the monophase model can accurately represent smectite formulas in hydrolysis reactions. The smectite was equilibrated with gibbsite and goethite over a pH range of 3.26 to 8.16. Equilibration was from both undersaturation and supersaturation with regard to Si(OH)04, H+, and Mg2+. When the composition of the smectite phase actually controlling sample solubility was accurately known, experimental and predicted solubility results agreed within experimental error. Such favorable circumstances may be rare, but when they occur they show that metastable equilibria can be determined for complex aluminosilicates.
