Abstract

In May of 2003, I had the privilege to speak at the 2nd Conference of the Romanian Laboratory Foundation in Sovata, Romania. I was asked by Dr. Ileana Funduc to discuss with a young researcher, Ms. Monica Dogaru, her poster on the incidence of β-thalassemia in the Romanian population. Unfortunately, in these studies, [hemoglobin A2] HbA2 had been measured by hemoglobin electrophoresis at alkaline pH, a method no longer regarded as suitable for the purpose. After some discussion I promised that I would get a HPLC analyzer for Ms. Dogaru’s laboratory to perform the quantification of HbA2. A few weeks later, Bio-Rad Laboratories (Canada) graciously agreed to donate a used HPLC analyzer to Romania.
