Abstract

Editor's note: The Mondragon cooperatives are located in one of the Basque provinces in the north of Spain. Their growth and economic success, from the founding of the first small producers' cooperative in 1954, have been an astonishing accomplishment that has attracted the attention of researchers working on questions related to job creation, economic development, employee stock ownership, industrial democracy, and the cooperative movement. William Foote Whyte was one of the first researchers in the United States to analyze the functions and effects of Mondragon's governance structures, in a series of journal articles and books starting in 1977. The interest in Mondragon continues. A recent library search identified over 70 books and 60 journal articles published on different aspects of the cooperatives. This research note provides an update on trends in the cooperatives' economic conditions, employment levels, and governance structures since 1990.
