Abstract
The history of the discovery of the Moine Thrust is reviewed and the origins are traced of the erroneous correlation of folding and thrusting in the Highlands. The reasons for believing that the folds and thrusts represent two successive tectonic events, which were separated by an unknown but probably considerable time-interval, are summarised. The evidence for the age of the Thrust is examined and some new data bearing on the problem are presented.
