Abstract

The modified Bröstrom repair for chronic lateral ankle instability is a relatively simple procedure that is indicated when clinical instability persists in spite of peroneal strengthening and proprioceptive rehabilitation. It is especially useful in patients who require a full range of motion in their ankle with preservation of peroneal function, such as dancers, gymnasts, and ice skaters. Bröstrom's original operation involved shortening the attenuated lateral ligaments to their normal length and suturing them to their anatomic locations on the distal fibula. Gould's modification uses the lateral portion of the extensor retinaculum to reinforce the repair, limit inversion, and help correct the subtalar component of the instability.
