Abstract

Implications of the modified anti-ghost insertion rule proposed recently by Polchinski are discussed from the viewpoint of the off-shell “string emission” vertex operator in the path integral method. It is argued that the modified insertion rule is a crucial element to derive (linearized) string field theory equations of motion (QΨ=0) from the Weyl invariance of the string emission vertex.
