Abstract

Abstract The paucity of observation networks as well as the problems of measuring atmospheric counter radiation have hampered energy balan,:e investigations. particularly in urban areas. Consequently, although theIr relability varies with location, empirical equations are often used for the computation of counter radiation. In the present paper. the application of the Angstrom, Brunt, Swinbank, and Idso and lackson equations to the Johannesburg environment is considered. The equations are modified in order to render them suitable for a high altitude, low latitude. urban location.
