Abstract

The basic tools of the modern goldsmith, differing little from the traditional hammer and file, are described. Making models in gold is particularly onerous as even the smallest gold nut and bolt has to be made by hand. Soldering of gold has been improved by the use of modern solders, the old ones giving rise to innumerable pinholes. Spinning gold to make round objects, for example a teapot, demands different tools and skills than smithing, and so does chasing, all being here discussed.
