Abstract

It is a common practice to suppose that the modern ages, together with antiquity and the Middle Ages constitute, three periods of human history. Since this is a roughest demarcation, the actual contents and characterization of these periods may vary depending on the country and people. Differences between the East and the West is also significant. However, in the following discussion I shall confine myself to describing these three periods as they appeared in Europe because my interest in this paper is in the modern period in Western Europe, which had a profound influence on the entire world, engulfing various civilizations including the writer own.
