Abstract

An elastic model has been developed which predicts the roundness profiles generated in cylindrical plunge grinding. The model considers two sources of error, which are run-out of the grinding wheel and an external vibration. Comparisons are made with experimental measurements, in which wheel run-out and an external vibration are imposed. Explanations are given for the differences. In particular, the model shows that roundness profiles are sensitive to small changes in conditions, such as wheel and workpiece speeds. In addition, the model clearly illustrates the difficulty in trying to assess the sources of errors from the shape of the roundness profile when more than one source of error is present.
