Abstract

This paper describes model of a hypothetical communication system (new generation), a method of modelling new generation communication systems. During the introductory period of new communication systems the basic problem of lack of experience arises. This problem is usually solved by a pilot project. Instead of this, there is another way to receive an overall view of the new communication system. This way is presented through modelling of a communication system using its hypothetical model. The described method is founded on a simple idea. While the signal staff officers are planning the structure of the communication system they have the necessary knowledge of the planned communication system. But we can provide a description of the new generation communication system. The model of the hypothetical communication system is determined by specific system properties, station and device properties. This determination is a model of the hypothetical communication system. To solve any problem, the model of the hypothetical communication system can be used during staff exercises. Skilled signal officers and developers have to co-operate in such exercises. This method is suitable for obtaining solutions of all the matters such as structure of communication systems, transit or access nodes. Several solutions may be supported by simulation, for example by using COMNET III. In the paper, the experience obtained in modelling the hypothetical tactical communication system TAKOM-C developed for the Czech Army is presented.
