Abstract

On the basis of the consideration that incoherent Cerenkov radiation from precipitating electrons with energy of less than 1 keV is nearly electrostatic, the emission process for high-latitude VLF hiss is reexamined semiquantitatively. It is pointed out that a peak intensity of the spectral power for the guided Cerenkov emission occurs near the local electron plasma frequency at a point along the field line where the plasma frequency coincides with the local electron cyclotron frequency. This result gives us a reasonable explanation for the main difference between the two previous studies of (1) Jorgensen and (2) Lim and Laaspere. (AIP)
