Abstract

Abstract The electrical mobility of polystyrene latex (PSL) particles, aerosolized by a pneumatic atomizer, was measured using a cylindrical mobility analyzer for a range of Knudsen numbers (Kn = λ/a) extending from 0.5 to 60. The calculated values of the slip correction were found to be in very good agreement with those of Millikan for oil drops, and the theory of Fuchs and Stechkina. A theoretical analysis indicates that for laminar flow in the cylindrical mobility analyzer, particle deposition on the center electrode is in the form of circular bands. The points of deposition of the particles and the width of the circular bands are independent of the velocity profile in the analyzer.
