Abstract

The story of the Mk 4 and Mk 5 coach developments from 1984 to 1991 is told by two members of the BR Project Team specially assembled to manage the procurement and entry into service of the new coaches. The paper is in two parts. Part 2 describes the testing, commissioning and service experience with the Mk 4 up to March 1991. Extensive ride development testing was necessary in order to enable the Mk 4 to meet its demanding ride specificiation. For the first time in nearly 20 years the ORE Climatic Testing Chamber in Vienna was used to test the complete coach at the specified extremes of temperature. Commissioning and service experience is discussed with details of some of the problems encountered and their solutions. The development of the Mk 5 coach engineering specification concludes the paper.
