Abstract
T HE unfavorable economic condition of Mid-West agriculture is due to many causes, especially those arising from the World War; however, transportation has produced, unquestionably, a very marked effect upon the situation. The Department of Agriculture has estimated that the increase of railroad rates on agricultural products since the War has averaged 57 per cent. On shipments of wheat for export, the following are typical cases of increases in rail rates, in cents per 100 pounds, from 1914 to 1996:
