Nieder-Heitmann is South African and has ministered in congregations of the former Dutch Reformed Church in Africa (African) and the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa (Afrikaans). He studied at the University of Stellenbosch and Western Theological Seminary (Holland, Michigan) and is currently doing doctoral research under the guidance of Prof. John W. de Gruchy (University of Cape Town).
