Abstract

In the many scholarly discussions, which have taken place regarding the relationship of language to music, the linguistic discipline of prosody has been largely ignored. Contemporary researches in linguistic prosody can reveal areas of commonality between language and music. Cognitive researchers have posited ideas regarding the relationship between speech and musical performance and have conducted experiments in music perception; a review of the literature of linguistic prosody demonstrates mayinteresting correlation in the research of both fields. Accentuation, information focus, and structural functions are examined, and the role of these attributes in atonal music is discussed.
