Abstract
Through an analysis of Dongfang Zazhi (The Eastern Miscellany), a highly influential journal of international affairs at the time, this chapter assesses the impact of the Russo-Japanese War on Chinese nationalism, a subject heretofore neglected by Chinese and Western scholarship. It argues that Chinese nationalism of a new type emerged in this period, directly related to the war and the consequent ambivalence that developed toward Japan, China's once weak and now strong neighbor. The Eastern Miscellany and Russo-Japanese War both began in the same year. The Western perception of Chinese civilization had gone from sheer admiration to contemptuousness. One of the important issues discussed in The Eastern Miscellany was the popular morale, which it felt should be encouraged, inspired, and strengthened so as to guard our territory and expand our race.
