Abstract

Three years after Rhodesia's Unilateral Declaration of Independence, the HMS Fearless Talks (9–12 October 1968) were Wilson's second and final major attempt to settle the Rhodesian crisis. The result of a secret initiative by the British Prime Minister, the Fearless conference came as a surprise to the observers as no diplomatic breakthroughs had been registered since the failure of the 1966 HMS Tiger summit. This paper explains how Wilson's decision to meet his Rhodesian homologue took place in the context of an unhopeful scenario and pinpoints those aspects that had the greatest influence in shaping his final adoption of an exit strategy from Rhodesia.
