Abstract

This paper attempts a comprehensive history of the techno-thriller in English, from its nineteenth century emergence through its post-World War I decline; its evolution of such derivatives as the spy story, war-themed post-apocalyptic fiction and military science fiction; and its revival in the 1970s and 1980s. In doing so the history emphasizes the connections between developments in fiction and developments in political life, while also examining manifestations of the form in other media, most notably the multimedia efflorescence of the genre in film, television and video gaming from the 1980s on.
