Abstract

New evidence concerning the environments of deposition of the Ravenscar Group (‘Deltaic Series’) is presented. The marine facies show evidence for deposition under the influence of wave and tidal currents during repeated transgression across the active and inactive delta lobes of coastal plains. Amongst the non-marine facies, true delta-front sediments are recognised in the Cloughton Formation and indicate the presence of a mixed regime (wave-tide-fluvial) delta similar to that of the present day Niger. The other non-marine facies are assigned to a variety of coastal plain environments.
