Abstract

Objective To discuss the middle and long-term clinical effect of Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation for refractory glaucoma. Methods Thirty patients with refractory glaucoma underwent glaucoma surgery using Ahmed glaucoma valve which was implanted in long scleral tunnel. The changes of intraocular pressure (IOP),the vision acuity and postoperative complications were observed.Mean follow-up time was (38.7±2.3) months. Results At the postoperative year 1,the mean IOP was(16.83±7.63)mmHg and the successful rate was 86.67%; at the postoperative year 2,the mean IOP was(17.18±8.35)mmHg and the successful rate was 83.33%,at the postoperative year 3,the mean IOP was 18.36±8.24mmHg and the successful rate was 76.67%.The postoperative IOP was lower than preoperative IOP (34.51±6.41mmHg) obviously. Conclusions The glaucoma surgery using Ahmed glaucoma valve planted in long scleral tunnel is an effective method for refractory glaucoma, and this is a simple operation, rapid recovery, fewer complications. It can control IOP better in the middle and long-term and can remain the better vision. Key words: Ahmed glaucoma valve; Refractory glaucoma
