Abstract
SummaryShoot cultures of gooseberry cvs Invicta and Careless were established in vitro. The addition of 0.1 μM NAA to a Murashige and Skoog initiation medium containing 1 μM BA reduced the degree of basal shoot browning, increased the percentage of expiant survival and shortened the time of shoot initiation. Invicta was better than Careless in almost all aspects of in vitro behaviour. The continued presence of 0.1 μM NAA in the proliferation medium depressed shoot proliferation rates in the standard Murashige and Skoog medium, but not in a similar medium in which the ammonium nitrate concentration was reduced to one-tenth of the normal value. Possible reasons for these findings are discussed.
