Abstract
<h3>Introduction and General Remarks</h3> Our study was undertaken in an attempt to determine the causative organisms associated with external ear disease in Puerto Rico. In addition we hoped it would be possible to observe changes in bacterial and fungus flora after treatment. The study also includes an attempt to evaluate the so-called superimposed fungus infection of the chronic discharging ear. Therapy, mainly consisting of topical and systemic administration of antibiotics, was given in some cases. Bacteriologic and mycologic data on cultures from 112 ears of 85 male veterans suffering from otitis externa have been collected. In vitro sensitivity tests of the effect of several antibiotics and drugs were carried out on microorganisms isolated from affected ears. Patients were studied at the Outpatient Department of the Veterans Administration Center on an ambulatory status. All cases studied were males, World War I, II, and Korean War veterans.
