Abstract

The metric tensor is perhaps the most important mathematical quantity in the theory of relativity. From a knowledge of the metric tensor one may compute the geometry of spacetime and for example the motion of the planets in the solar system. In this chapter we shall give a thorough introduction to the metric tensor and its physical significance in the theory of relativity.
