Abstract

Few playwrights have been more slandered, abused or honoured in performance than William Shakespeare. In this collection of over 300 stories, Shakespeare comes to us through a multitude of episodes: affrays and riots, royal connections, astounding first-night triumphs, poignant leave-takings, accidents and recoveries. With contributions from Sanuel Pepys, Dr. Johnson, Ellen Terry, Ralph Richardson, John Gielgud, Peter Brook, Richard Burton, Peter Hall and Kenneth Branagh, amongst others, the reader can survey the changes in theatrical approaches from Shakespeare to the modern day.
