Abstract

A method for the synthesis of 2-(1,3-diphenyl-1H-1,2,4-triazol-5-yl)-2,2-dinitroacetonitrile has been developed herein and its subsequent reaction with substituted aromatic nitrile N-oxides was explored. The latter proceeds by 1.3-dipolar cycloaddition mechanism and results in the formation of 5-[(1,3-diphenyl-1H-1,2,4-triazol-5-yl)dinitromethyl]-3-aryl-1,2,4-oxadiazoles. This oxadiazole derivative further interacts with KOH in ethanol to afford the potassium salt of aci-5-dinitromethyl-1,3-diphenyl-1H-1,2,4-triazole and substituted 5-hydroxy-1,2,4-oxadiazoles.
