Abstract

This paper introduces and demonstrates the use of the method of Generalized Ordered Probit with Selectivity (GOPS). It simultaneously estimates (1) functions that describe the relations between the explanatory variables and an ordered dependent variable such as marital happiness, and (2) the selectivity function that pertains to being married. It does not presume the equality-of-slopes assumption of conventional ordered probit. The GOPS method is demonstrated for modeling marital happiness. The results are compared to those from conventional ordered probit and generalized ordered probit without selectivity.
