Abstract
Abstract This article argues that the tendency to interpret the stake metaphor in Ezra 9:8 as a reference to security is out of step with the sentiments of the penitential prayer in which it is used. The prayer emphasizes community vulnerability. Other uses of the stake as a metaphor in the Hebrew Bible include an element of divine dependence either explicitly or implicitly. The metaphor is precisely in tune with the sentiments of the prayer and represents Yahweh-dependent support. Interpretations need to reflect the nuances of the metaphor while translations must be careful not to obscure its subtleties.
