Abstract

Unirradiated plutonium-bearing ceramic fuel materials are prepared for ceramographic examination in a dry nitrogen atmosphere, gloved facility. The compartmented box is arranged so that spread of grit and alpha activity is minimized. Photomicrography is done in an open-faced hood enclosure attached to a metallograph stage. In addition to the techniques normally used, support work is done in preparing samples for use on the electron microscope, scanning electron microscope, electron microprobe, dilatometer, and x-ray diffraction instruments. Chemical etchants are included for PuO 2 and mixed uranium-plutonium oxides and nitrides.
