Abstract

d-Galacturonic acid-1-C 14 is metabolized by the detached ripening strawberry fruit to l-ascorbic acid-6-C 14, l-galactonic acid-6-C 14, galactaric acid containing C 14 in the carboxyl carbon, and d-xylosc-1-C 14. In addition, it is incorporated into pectin as anhydro units of d-galacturonic acid-1-C 14. The methyl ester of d-galacturonic acid-U-C 14 is utilized by the strawberry for l-ascorbic acid synthesis and pectin formation. The relative metabolic distribution of C 14 from the free acid and its methyl ester are compared.
