Abstract
The present studies in rats provide evidence that in pregnancy, as in iron deficiency anemia, the capacity for enhancement of oral iron absorption extends to some chelated forms of the metal. Iron derived from absorbed or parenteral chelate is available to the placenta and fetus. Nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), is an effective oral iron source in pregnancy.
