Abstract

Crime scene investigation is more than processing a crime scene for physical evidence. Crime scene investigators know how physical evidence can be used in a criminal investigation. The usefulness or probative value of the physical evidence is varied and can be used for a number of information purposes: corpus delicti; modus operandi; linkage of persons to other persons, objects, or scenes; disproving or supporting suspect, victim, or witness statements or testimony; provide investigative leads; and reconstruction of a crime. Physical evidence can have cumulative effects too. Proper crime scene investigation can face a number of challenges or barriers but in order to achieve reliability, validity, and relevancy, they must be overcome.
