Abstract

Valine and isoleucine are shown to be readily incorporated into urinary ALA. Their specific incorporation is higher than that of precursors of succinyl-CoA generated via the tricarboxylic acid cycle. This suggests the possibility of two pools of succinyl-CoA within the mitochondrion. The role of branched-chain amino acid catabolism in heme synthesis is discussed.
