Abstract

P. P. Rickham, Consultant Pediatric Surgeon at the Royal Liverpool Children's Hospital, who together with Isabelle Forshall founded the Neonatal Surgical Unit of Alder Hey's Children's Hospital in Liverpool, has reported, in a very interesting monograph, on the results of his investigation of the physiologic and pathologic changes which are brought about by surgery in the newborn infant. The book provides an excellent review of the large number of postoperative metabolic studies done in the adult and of the relatively small number made in the newborn period.
