The article looks at evaluating students' development of language proficiency in foreign language classes, focusing on the growing use of online courses in this area. The author notes that language proficiency is a complex concept with multiple definitions and components. Topics include the use of computer-mediated communication to allow for interaction in online language courses and research comparing the learning outcomes in online versus classroom-based language courses.
