Abstract

The investigated area is situated between the cities of Recife and João Pessoa in northeastern Brazil. Here a sedimentary strip extends alongside the coast. Its deposits range in age from Santonian to Paleocene. The transition Mesozoic-Tertiary is represented by limestones. Sedimentological investigation revealed that the deposition of this series was continuous, representing only one marine invasion period. The limestones themselves are chiefly various types of micrites. The micropaleontological analysis, based especially on Foraminifera, however, shows a sharp faunistical break between the Maastrichtian (Gramame Formation) and the Paleocene (Maria Farinha Formation), in which the specific Mesozoic species disappear and the typical Tertiary ones appear abruptly. The limit coincides more or less with the beginning of the regression phase, with a changing ratio between planktonic and benthonic Foraminifera.
