Abstract

An investigation has been made of the mercury (3P1) photosensitized polymerization of acetylene. The polymerization is inhibited by nitric oxide and it is concluded that free radicals are probably involved. The quantum yield of the uninhibited reaction is 4.5±1.2. Experiments over the range 25°C to 300°C show that the temperature coefficient of the reaction is not large. A few measurements were also made with Cd(3P1) and Cd(1P1) atoms.
