Abstract

In the 1960s, there was a growing shortage of physicians especially in the specialty areas of pediatrics and family practice. This shortage of health care providers was the motivation and inspiration of the nurse practitioner (NP) movement with the creation of the first official NP program starting in 1965 at the University of Colorado by Loretta Ford, RN, and Henry Silver, MD. Around the same time, the conception of the medical home model was also taking place. In 1967, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Council on Pediatric Practice initially defined the medical home as a centralized source of a child’smedical records, emphasizing its use in children with chronic conditions or special care needs (Sia, Tonniges, Osterhus, & Taba, 2004).
