Abstract

Although political parties in South Africa still cannot agree on what form of democracy will best suit the country's situation, all agree that some form of democracy is inevitable. The media (television, newspapers, radio and magazines) is, however, essential for such a democracy to provide information to those in society. If one has to be honest, most will agree that, for a number of reasons, the media in South Africa did not exactly fulfill this role to the full in the past. In future it must publish the ideas, fears and hopes of all population groups. Journalists must become activists for democracy, freedom of speech and, most important, peace in the country.
