Abstract
The congestion that is the clinical hallmark of most cases of cardiac failure begins with the development of a decrement in the heart's pumping competence and eventuates in edema and ascites. Between these end points is a complex of hemodynamic, hormonal, metabolic, and electrolytic abnormalities, many of which represent vain attempts to compensate for the underlying cardiac deficiency.
