Abstract

It is known that the irradiation of benzene in the gas phase with 1849 Å light yields fulvene. It is assumed that the intermediate is the same as in the liquid phase. A correlation diagram between the states of the benzene and the intermediate molecules suggests a possible mechanism according to which the 1E 1u state of benzene undergoes an internal conversion to the 1B 2u state. This state crosses to the ground state of the intermediate, which can either lead to fulvene, benzvalene or revert to the ground state of benzene.
