Abstract

Abstract Cold agglutinins with specificity to the I-erythrocyte antigen (CAI) were detected in serum of rabbits injected intravenously with live or killed Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Streptococcus MG or Listeria monocytogens. Similar antibody responses were elicited in CF1 but not in SWJ mice suggesting genetic variability of these immune responses. CAI synthesized in response to M. pneumoniae were found to cross-react with other bacterial antigens (Streptococcus MG and L. monocytogenes) whereas CAI following injection of L. monocytogenes reacted only with this micro-organism. The heterogeneity of these antibodies with specificity to the I-antigen was demonstrated by their inhibition with disaccharide ligands of α and β configuration.
