Abstract

In order to investigate the mechanism of frost heaving phenomena in unsaturated cohesive soil, frost heaving tests were performed on unsaturated cohesive soil. The main concluding remarks derived from these studies are as follows; i) A different pattern of frost heave curves was produced for a variation of water content and degree of saturation in the specimen. ii) The frost heave occurs as a result of the development of ice lenses formed by the water migration towards the freezing front from the unfrozen soil. The water migration is significantly influenced by the water content and degree of saturation in the specimen, iii) The frost heave characteristics have changed for the soil of the degree of saturation more than 85%.
