Abstract

A new kinetic approach to the problem of the heterogeneous chemical degradation of polyesters in alkaline solutions has been proposed. The relationship between the effective rate constant of alkaline degradation of polyesters and the bimolecular rate constant, k 2, of the alkaline hydrolysis of the corresponding low molecular analog has been studied. An equation correlating the rate of change of the linear dimensions of a sample undergoing chemical degradation with the diffusion coefficient, the degradation agent concentration and k 2 has been derived. It is shown that the relationship thus obtained is valid for the alkaline degradation of various polyesters and may be used to estimate the hydrolytic stability of polyesters in alkaline solutions.
