Abstract

The mechanical properties of pure Al 2O 3 can be significantly improved by incorporating Cr 3C 2 particles by a hot-pressing technique. For instance, the fracture strength ( σ f ) and toughness ( K IC ) increase from 380 to 600 MPa and 3.8 to 5.5 MPa · m 0.5, respectively, when 10 vol.% Cr 3C 2 are incorporated. Further annealing treatment in air at temperatures from 1000 °C to 1325 °C substantially strengthen and toughen the same composites to σ f = 800 MPa and K IC = 9.5 MPa · m 0.5. Possible strengthening and toughening mechanisms are discussed by the fracture mode as well as the interactions between micropores and cracking.
